And it loves its young and old listeners, for whom it has prepared magnificent celebrations: it will commemorate important moments from its rich history. Be with us! Our – and your – Philharmonic was “born” on January 1, 1956 and organized its first concert under its own name less than three weeks later. The program included fanfares from Smetana’s Libuše, Janáček’s Taras Bulba and Dvořák’s New World. At this year's first concert of the Family Subscription cycle, you can look forward not only to these - and other - compositions, but also to the current chief conductor of the Brno Philharmonic, Dennis Russell Davies!

Requiem

12/11/25, 19:00 / Janáčkovo divadlo (Janáček Theatre)

The autumn concert is in the spirit of the beautiful tradition of our opera company, which is the performance of large vocal-instrumental works, where the great choir and orchestra of Janáček's opera NdB can present themselves outside their classical opera repertoire. This time, it will be conducted by the new chief conductor Robert Kružík, and the evening will belong to one of Antonín Dvořák's exceptional works. His Requiem is one of the most beautiful arrangements of this mass for the dead, although in this case Antonín Dvořák was not inspired by death, but by a much more prosaic reason - the work was commissioned by a music festival in Birmingham, England, and it was Dvořák's London publisher who suggested the mass for the dead. Dvořák therefore conceived it more as a reflection and assessment of the past half century of his life and at the same time as an expression of his relationship with God. The Requiem, divided into two parts, is one of Dvořák's most profound works. Freed from external pomp and composed in a form without closed musical numbers, it is a confession of the composer's view of death.

SALIERI AND HIS PUPILS

12/11/25, 19:00 / Besední dům Concert Hall

In 2025, we commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death and 275th anniversary of the birth of the Italian composer Antonio Salieri (1750–1825), one of the most important opera composers and influential teachers of his time. Today, however, his legacy as a composer is unfortunately unknown to very few people, and Salieri's music has practically disappeared from theatre and concert stages. What's more, his name is shrouded in the shadow of a legend according to which Salieri was a stuffy and less inventive rival (or even murderer) of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; the wider public associates him with this legend because of the "thread" of works of art, which begins with Pushkin's drama Mozart and Salieri (1830), adapted by Rimsky-Korsakov into an opera (1898), and ends with Forman's film Amadeus (1984), based on Peter Shaffer's 1980 play of the same name.

Aida

16/11/25, 18:00 / Janáčkovo divadlo (Janáček Theatre)

Verdi's Aida is one of his masterpieces, which contains none of the guaranteed ingredients of a romantic Italian opera - love, jealousy, political intrigue, large choral scenes and inevitable tragic death. Of course, this also includes a great singing cast, in this case Csilla Boross, Sung Kyu Park, Luis Cansino, Aleš Jenis and others. This will also be the first time that our company will collaborate with our junior ballet company NdB2 on this production. It was Verdi who usually chose the themes to be set to music, but in this case the offer came from outside. The opera was originally commissioned by the Egyptian viceroy Isma´il Pasha for the opening ceremonies of the Suez Canal and for the newly built Cairo Opera House. The productions usually focus on the secret lovers Radames and Aida, but what if we looked at the whole story through the eyes of Amneris, whose love for Radames is determined to win her at any cost, unaware that the price will ultimately be human lives, including the life of her chosen one?

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons in Janoska Style The Janoska brothers are from Bratislava. Since 2016, they have been recording exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon, where they have released three albums (Janoska Style, Revolution, Big B’s), for which they have won several awards, including the Golden Record. At the end of October 2024, their fourth album, Vivaldi: The Four Seasons in Janoska Style, will be released under the DG label. The members of the ensemble are united not only by family ties, but also by a common musical vision. Their virtuosity and improvisational art allow them to perform a wide repertoire, from works of the classical repertoire to their own compositions and arrangements, crossing genre boundaries.

YOUNG BLOOD or MUSIC CLOSE UP I

19/11/25, 19:00 / Besední dům Concert Hall

The Brno Philharmonic Orchestra Academy is a project that allows young talented musicians – students or recent graduates of music schools accepted on the basis of a selection procedure – to gain orchestral experience in a professional ensemble. In this way, the Philharmonic educates new generations of players who may one day join its ranks. The OAFB has been operating for six seasons and its fruits are already evident: some of its graduates are already members of our orchestra, others regularly return to help out. The importance and value of this experience for the artistic growth of young musicians and for the future of the orchestra is therefore unquestionable.

The Bartered Bride

21/11/25, 19:00 / Janáčkovo divadlo (Janáček Theatre)

The plot takes us to a village where Jeník and Mařenka live, two young people who love each other. However, Mařenka is to marry the son of a rich farmer, Mícha, to whom her father is in debt. However, the young girl is not going to just give up her love and refuses to marry the chosen groom. Jeník is clever and uses the matchmaker Kecal. However, he and Mařenka do not tell each other about their plans and the whole thing gets a bit confusing... Ondřej Havelka has created a masterfully played musical theatre that is based on beautiful folk traditions, but at the same time has found a unique perspective on the entire opera. It takes place not, as is usually the case, in the summer during the harvest festival, but during the carnival season, or as we call it in Moravia, carnival! So you can look forward not only to comedians in the 3rd act, but also to a series of genuine Moravian carnival masquerades.

A fabricated trial through the lens of the online world. The judicial murder of M. Horáková is one of the darkest chapters in our modern history. The chamber opera Tomorrow Will Be… does not attempt a literal reconstruction, but opens up a broader perspective. Could a similar tragic story take place today? Although M. Horáková's suffering cannot be compared to anything, can the anonymous online space become a modern courtroom? A chamber opera by Aleš Březina and Jiří Nekvasil from 2008, based on the trial of Milada Horáková. The work won the Alfréd Radok Prize and the Sazka and Divadelné noviny Prize. The judicial murder of Milada Horáková is one of the darkest chapters in our modern history. She was convicted in a fabricated trial by a regime that persecuted and liquidated its opponents for decades. Totalitarian power, ideology and fear. Her death – senseless and cruel – became a symbol of courage, conscience and human dignity.

Her Godmother

22/11/25, 18:00 / Janáčkovo divadlo (Janáček Theatre)

Jenůf pastorkyňa is one of Janáček's most famous works and is a permanent part of the Brno Opera's repertoire. It began as a realistic drama by Gabriela Preissová, which the composer himself adapted into an opera libretto. Although he had to shorten the text of the drama significantly, he managed to deepen the effect of the tragic story from the Moravian countryside. The prodigal and unstable Števa, the violent and yet at heart kind Laca, and above all the relentless Kostelnička, whose efforts to maintain her position and respect in the village community lead her to murder the child of her ward Jenůfa. Janáček (1854–1928) captured the individual characters in a masterful dramatic short story that is chilling, yet at the same time arouses compassion and understanding in us. The final form of the work, marked by the death of the composer's daughter Olga, was a long and thorny path. After its successful premiere in Brno in 1904, Jenůfí pastorkyňa had to wait twelve long years before Janáček's efforts were crowned with well-deserved success on other domestic and foreign stages.

Nabucco

23/11/25, 18:00 / Janáčkovo divadlo (Janáček Theatre)

How high is the price for trying to be a good ruler and build a great empire? The basis of Verdi's opera is the Old Testament story of the captivity of the Jewish people by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar and their desire to return to their homeland. A story that still does not lose its power and relevance, and whose personification is the famous chorus "Va, pensiero, sull'alidorate" (Fly, thought, on golden wings...). Like other Verdi works, however, Nabucco also hides another, more intimate layer about love, the two sisters Fenena and Abigail and their conflict for the love of their beloved man and father. Verdi portrayed everything with the feeling of a true playwright, and the music full of immediacy, passion and temperament rightly captivates the audience to this day.

It was used in the liturgy until the second half of the 16th century, when it was removed from it. It returned to it in 1727 as part of the propria for the feast of the Sorrows of Our Lady, and has been regularly set to music by composers since then. Antonín Dvořák's Stabat Mater marked the beginning of the author's worldwide fame. The work was first performed by Adolf Čech on December 23, 1880 in Prague, followed by a performance in Brno conducted by Leoš Janáček on Palm Sunday in 1882.

Without borders or beyond? How long will the true love of Rosina and Almaviva, which was supposed to be forever, last, and when will the innocent flirtation with Cherubino turn into something much more serious? Where are the boundaries in human relationships… After the successful production of Handel's Alcina, director Jiří Heřman and I will set out to discover the beauties of Mozart's music and his opera, which enjoys unwavering popularity all over the world. And it is no wonder, because The Marriage of Figaro, in addition to brilliant and sparkling music that will sweep you away with its incessant flow similar to a mountain stream, also boasts an almost dramatic libretto. And how could it not, when the basis for Da Ponte was the play of the same name by the excellent French playwright Pierre de Beaumarchais.

A unique joint project of two respected ensembles offers a way to work with the polyphonic repertoire of the 15th and 16th centuries. Cappella Pratensis represents a purely vocal treatment of the Renaissance church repertoire and interpretation from the original notation, while Ramillete de Tonos adds instruments such as the vihuela de mano, Renaissance harp and Renaissance flutes. Thanks to this approach, beautiful compositions emerged from behind the walls of churches and cathedrals, and the music of the leading composers of the time became accessible to a wider audience. Program: LOYSET COMPE`RE / JEAN MOUTON / GRADUALE DE TEMPORE (MORAVIAN STATE LIBRARY IN BRNO)

Advent time calls for a pre-Christmas atmosphere. How and with what music did the Philharmonic celebrate Christmas in the Besední dům seventy years ago? And how do they celebrate it today? You will find out at the next Family Subscription concert!

Nutcracker

06/12/25, 18:00 / Janáčkovo divadlo (Janáček Theatre)

Why can't the whole world do without The Nutcracker at Christmas? Because Tchaikovsky's music, together with the Christmas story of little Klárka, will capture the heart of not only every little person at this time, but will also take adult viewers, parents and grandparents, back to their childhood. It is simply the ideal family Christmas title. For the sixth season, the NdB Ballet is presenting a magical and epic production from Montreal, Canada, with great success.

Winter road

The song genre is one of the most beautiful musical forms. On a miniature surface, stories of love, tragedy, humor and tears are hidden, and their performance, entrusted only to the human voice accompanied by the piano, opens up a unique opportunity for performers and listeners to capture every inner detail of the emotion being experienced.
