Manon Lescaut

08/06/25, 20:30 / Biskupský dvůr

Director Stanislav Moša is staging Nezval's text for the second time, having first done so in 1995, when the theatre celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with this production in the newly renovated hall on Lidická Street. At the time, the director and manager wrote about Nezval's text: "There is little Czech theatre literature that can be said to be a poem. Through it speaks a true passion bound by an amazing form enchanted in the beauty of the Czech language." Moša's adaptation of Manon Lescaut, which was subtitled "lyrical drama-confession", broke away from the linear narrative of the well-known story and created a timeless parable. The old abbé de Grieux recalls his fateful relationship with a sinful saint, which gives the originally lyrical story dramatic dimensions and brings to life long-ago secrets, hints and loves in the memories of a man at the end of his life.

Hurvínek sells the bride

09/06/25, 10:00 / Reduta Theatre

Daddy, how is a bride sold? How did you come to know that someone would sell a bride, Hurvínek? Well, I read here: The National Theatre in Brno is performing Bedřich Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride. So how is it, Daddy? Well, you know, it's just like... how should I put it to you... it's a trick to buy a bride for yourself. So now I'm a fool - is it being sold or bought? You know what, Hurvajz, take Žeryk and Mánička and we'll go to the opera, it'll be easier than explaining it to you!

The choreography Serenity will bring the calm power of minimalism to the stage, inviting the audience to silence and deeper perception. The theme of the choreography is based on the contrast of movement and stillness. The dancers will move on the border of dynamic movement until the moment of absolute stop. These moments of stillness evoke living sculptures that create space for a meditative experience and a pause in a busy world. With this work, the choreographer, Barbora Rašková, tries to offer the audience a unique opportunity to slow down and let themselves be carried away by the depth of the moment.

Does his teaching bring joy and goodness or only destruction and chaos? The opera King Roger by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski does not offer a clear answer; he himself described it as a mystery whose theme is man’s self-knowledge, his sexuality and spirituality.

Black and White

13/06/25, 19:00 / Mahen Theatre

Sometimes a single second is enough… Black and White is essentially a modern version of the flagship of the classical repertoire – Swan Lake. It is a title that is one of the most performed ballets in the world. Our version, which was a great success in the USA, represents today. It is an attempt to approach this work to the younger generation from a different perspective, by denying all traditions and visually transforming Swan Lake as such. In the classical version of the ballet, the dominant characters are ballerinas (the main double roles of Odette – Odile), so it is mainly a statement of the female element. In our version, we offer a view of Swan Lake through the main character, Prince Siegfried, who is going through a difficult life situation associated with the treatment of a serious illness – cancer. Sometimes a second is enough – and life is turned upside down.

Lyre – golden, silver or bronze… In a single night, it created stars out of performers and hits out of songs. However, one inappropriate verse from the Lyre Stage caused a ban on creation and public performance, and managed to destroy the careers and lives of performers and their families.

Jesus Christ Superstar

16/06/25, 20:00 / Hudební scéna Městského divadla Brno (Music Theatre)

rock opera

During the time of Roman rule over the Jews, Jesus of Nazareth preaches and gains followers. The Jewish high priests fear the loss of power, while the crowds celebrate Jesus as the messiah. Judas, portrayed as a rational opponent warning of Roman intervention, stands against Jesus, whose actions can be perceived either through his divinity or as gambling. The plot captures the last seven tense days of Jesus' life from his entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion. The legendary musical work fascinates with its musical richness - the violent rhythms of the crowd's enthusiasm alternate with slower passages by the priests, the dramatic singing of Jesus and Judas contrasts with the melodic entrances of Mary Magdalene, the folk instrumentation of Pilate's dream with the musical song of Herod. Cast: Tomáš David, Tomáš Šulaj, Kristýna Danhelová, Pavel Majkus, Aleš Slanina / Jiri Daniel, Pavel Hromádka, Petr Čagánek, Martin Hudec, Tomáš Žilinský, Petr Trčálek, Jiri Hejcman, Pavel Šupina, David Vaculík, Pavlína Hejcmanová, Tereza Novotná, Jitka Hlaváčková, Linda Milotová

Prison Bells

16/06/25, 20:00 / Špilberk Castle Courtyard

One hundred and thirty years since the death of Christian Friedrich d’Elvert. “Two hundred and ninety years ago, rich people in a rich city cast the largest bell in the world. They spent two whole years decorating it to make it beautiful and majestic. However, the wooden structure in which the bell was installed suddenly caught fire. Useless and therefore criminal people were sent to put out the fire. They formed an endless chain and poured bucket after bucket from the mighty river. The fire subsided and the bell cracked. For a hundred years it lay in the hole with the corpses of those punished by the fire and therefore the bell destroyers. Then the rich finally came to their senses and donated the cracked bell to the needy so that they would have somewhere to live and something to eat. Since then, carillons have been built near prisons.” Program: Dmitri Kourliandski – fanfare for glockenspiel commissioned Dmitri Kourliandski – Lacrimosa (Anatomy Of Pain) Iannis Xenakis – A l`ile de Goree Eliška Cílková – commissioned for glockenspiel and BCO Alfred Schnittke – The End of St. Petersburg Brno Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Pavel Šnajdr
