Along with Shakespeare's Hamlet and Leonardo's Mona Lisa, The Magic Flute is considered one of the three greatest enigmatic works of our culture. And indeed the origin of the theme and libretto is shrouded in mystery. It is a compilation of many motifs and characters from well-known and lesser-known stories. Many art theorists, including Egyptologists, have been trying to interpret it for centuries.
