Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 “Fate”

  • A masterful transcription of Bach’s six-voice ricercar from the Musical Offering by Anton Webern, a leading figure of the Second Viennese School, who split the melody between several instruments using the technique of Klangfarbenmelodie (thus making the individual tones independent in terms of colour) • A suite compiled by the legendary conductor, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, from Alfred Schnittke’s poly-stylistic incidental music, both witty and chilling, for The Census List (after Gogol’s Dead Souls), directed by Yurii Lyubinov at Moscow’s Taganka Theatre • Beethoven’s “fate knocking at the door”, or one of classical music’s most famous symphonies, completed and premiered in 1808
