The seemingly heterogeneous worlds of Claudio Monteverdi and Leoš Janáček, two music geniuses, were far from each other in time. However, both masters share a revolutionary desire to destroy the established music orders and the courage to experiment. Even more remarkable is their common love for the human word and awareness of the importance of a text as the carrier of musical idea. Monteverdi’s concept of the importance of the word in music formulated in his motto “Prima le parole, poi la musica“ was supremely used in the vocal works by Leoš Janáček, some 300 years later.
