JFB 2022: Joey Calderazzo & John Patitucci

Joey Calderazzo and John Patitucci belong to the category of musicians "par excellence", whether in the role of leaders or sidemans. After all, Calderazz's piano solos, full of musical allusions and forums, adorned the festival concert of Branford Marsalis and Patitucci's empathic bass in Brno, among other things, claimed the music of Wayne Shorter. Now they are embarking on a joint world tour for the first time in a duo.
Although pianist Joey Calderazzo is an excellent sideman chosen by Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland, it would be a mistake to miss his own thirteen albums, on which he proved to be a brave composer and leader. In his own projects, Calderazzo turns into a tireless discoverer, for whom freedom is the norm, improvisation is the key and swing is an absolute necessity. Calderazzo is a bit of a Ferda Ant in the best sense of the word. He is no stranger to musical work of any kind. "I can play a little bit and a little bit of that. I have something of my own, other times I "steal" other musicians. I am having fun and I hope that my listeners and I will be with me, "he says with a smile.
Jazz patrons have long associated John Patitucci's name not only with celebrities such as Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz, but also with a diverse range of his own recordings. Whether Patitucci embraces double bass or six-string bass guitars, his respect for history combined with a progressive approach will always show. A confirmation stamp on these words is his latest album Soul of the Bass. Bach is the whole solo album, and the spirituals of R’n’B and Patitucci prove that if a master plays the bass, he can pretend to be the whole band in any genre. "I think as you get older, you prefer sound and feel in all your music. And when you express yourself legibly and coherently, the result is a certain purity that can draw the listener into the communication, ”says Patitucci. He is also going to print these words in a new joint project, which he will present with Joey Calderazz in Brno.
