MIDWIFE (USA)
Midwife is a dark experimental music project, with which multi-instrumentalist Madeline Johnston manages to conjure romance out of excruciating pain. The music is soft and airy, as well as dark and heavy. Ethereal heaven metal, with which she received enthusiastic responses not only from the editors of Pitchfork, but also at this year's Roadburn. Midwife releases recordings on the well-known San Francisco label Flenser Records alongside related artists such as Have A Nice Life, Planning For Burial or Black Wing. This year, in February and March, she also completed a big tour in the United States, where she supported Deafheaven, and in May she is again on tour in the USA, but this time with The Body company.
In early 2020, Madeline Johnston was scheduled to tour extensively, but due to the pandemic, she changed plans and went back to recording. This resulted in the third full-length Luminol album, which was completely created during the quarantine. She collaborated on the recording with, among others, Colin Caufield of DIIV and Dan Barrett of Have A Nice Life. Together they created a heavy atmosphere that flows with disappointment, sadness and themes around the search for truth, self-harm and imprisonment in contrast to free agency. Midwife will bring her dreamy vocals and droning guitar to Kabinet in the fall. A must for fans of Grouper or Julianna Barwick.
