Otto Schenk is awarded an honorary doctorate by the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts
The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno is awarding the Austrian actor and opera director Otto Schenk and honorary doctorate. The ceremonial assembly will take place in the Divadlo na Orlí aand will be part of this year’s celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts. more
JazzFestBrno 2018: Wynton Marsalis, Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau and Donny McCaslin
JazzFestBrno revealed the first four concerts from the programme for its 17th year. The Israeli bass player Avishai Cohen is returning to Brno with a new expanded group and an album “1970”. Then there will be the saxophonist Donny McCaslin, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with their bandmaster Wynton Marsalis and the American pianist Brad Mehldau. more
A Chamber Opera about Božena Němcová: Jsem kněžna bláznů
The Ensemble Opera Diversa has expanded its repertoire with an original work. The libretto of the opera Jsem kněžna bláznů (I am the Princess of Fools) was written by Olga Sommerová to music by Lenka Nota. The opera is conducted by Gabriela Tardonová. more
In May the metal group Insania brought out their album Na počátku byl spam In the Beginning was Spam). Their autumn tour for the new disc culminates in a concert at Brno’s Fléda club. There the group will christen their new album and will celebrate thirty years on the musical scene. Among the evening’s guests will be Jan Vozáry, Jan P. Muchow, Vladivojna La Chia and Tubabu. more

The Exposition of New Music, under programme director Viktor Pantůček, offers new approaches to music expression. The Graffe Quartet Celebrates its 20th Birthday
The Graffe Quartet is 20 years old. The non-traditional music cycle VOX IMAGINIS, which combines chamber music, words and art opens with a concert entitled Brno Inspiration. There will be string quartets by Leoš Janáček, the poetry of Oldřich Mikulášek and Jan Skácel and the premiere of the string quartet Blízkost (Closeness) by Jiří Pavlica. more

Connection, unity, contemplation - these words can be used to describe the musical evening of Schola Gregoriana Pragensis under the direction of David Eben and organist Tomáš Thon, which took place yesterday as part of the Easter Festival of Sacred Music at the church of St. Thomas. Not only the singing of a Gregorian chant, but also the works of composer Petr Eben (1929-2007) enlivened the church space with sound and colour for an hour. more
With a concert called Ensemble Inégal: Yesterday at the church of St. John, Zelenka opened the 31st edition of the Easter Festival of Sacred Music, this time with the suffix Terroir. This slightly mysterious word, which is popularly used in connection with wine, comes from the Latin word for land or soil, and carries the sum of all the influences, especially the natural conditions of a particular location and on the plants grown there. This term is thus metonymically transferred to the programme of this year's VFDH, as it consists exclusively of works by Czech authors, thus complementing the ongoing Year of Czech Music. more
For the fourth subscription concert of the Philharmonic at Home series, which took place on 14 March at the Besední dům and was entitled Mozartiana, the Brno Philharmonic, this time under the direction of Czech-Japanese conductor Chuhei Iwasaki, chose four works from the 18th to 20th centuries. These works are dramaturgically linked either directly through their creation in the Classical period or by inspiration from musical practices typical of that period. The first half of the concert featured Martina Venc Matušínská with a solo flute. more
The second stop on the short Neues Klavier Trio Dresden's Czech-German tour was at the concert hall of the Janáček Academy of Music on 6 March at 16:00. The last opera première of the National Theatre Brno this year was Hurvínek Sells the Bride, which was co-produced with the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre. The première continued the thematic focus associated with the Year of Czech Music and took place on 24 November in the large hall of the Reduta Theatre. more
