Igor Stravinsky: Piano-Rag-Music

The ballet *Le Boeuf sur le toit* (The Ox on the Roof)—originally conceived as musical accompaniment for the silent slapstick comedies of Charlie Chaplin—was composed by Darius Milhaud (1892–1974) between 1919 and 1920, two years after his return from Brazil. Milhaud infused the score with Brazilian folk melodies and the rhythms of the tango, samba, and other Latin American dances. He dedicated the piano piece *Tango des Fratellini*—which he later adapted from the ballet score—to the Fratellini brothers, a trio of clowns who performed at the Cirque Medrano in Paris and were popular among the city's intellectuals during the 1920s.
