London-based producer, pianist, and composer Alfa Mist stands out as one of the most prominent figures on the contemporary British nu-jazz scene; his work perfectly embodies how modern urban culture can intertwine with a deep-rooted musical tradition. His musical origins were shaped by hip hop, dark and melancholic beats, and a fascination with sampling. It was, in fact, his desire to gain a detailed understanding of the complex harmonic structures within the tracks he was chopping up and sampling that eventually led him to the piano.
