John McLaughlin v Brně: Legenda překračující vlastní stín

Letošní ročník festivalu Jazzfest Brno nabízí nepřeberné množství rozmanitých crossoverů , žánrových směsic a fúzí. V duchu tohoto stylového spektra v rekonstruovaném (akusticky významně vylepšeném) sále Janáčkova divadla nabídl svůj vyhlášený osobitý nadžánrový sound klasik jazz fusion a britský kytarista John McLaughlin se svou formací The 4th Dimension.

K dostání byla nejen trička a plakáty, ale především alba, oba nedávné „živáky“ Live at Ronnie Scott´s a Live in San Francisco i ceněné studiové album Black Light.

Pokud jde o různé podoby jazzu, od svého sólového debutu Extrapolation v roce 1969 si prošel post-bopem, jazzrockem, bluesovými vlivy, inspirací indickou hudbou, flamenkem i módní psychedelií, jazzovou klasikou i jazz fusion. S Davisem nahrál dvě klíčová alba jazzové historie: In a Silent Way a Bitches Brew. Sám Davis ho podnítil ke zformování vlastní kapely.

A tak v 70. letech vznikl Mahavishnu Orchestra, snad nejinvenčnější jazzrocková formace všech dob. Temperamentní elektrický jazzrock říznutý indickými harmoniemi ovlivnil řadu následovníků, alba Birds of Fire a Inner Mounting Flame i se zpožděním vydané Lost Trident Sessions patří do zlatého fondu jazzové hudby.  Mahavishnu Orchestra prošel několika reinkarnacemi, než McLaughlin na čas odložil elektrickou kytaru a pod vlivem své milované indické hudby založil spolu s indickými spoluhráči kapelu Shakti, jejímž prostřednictvím uvedl do jazzové hudby indické rágy, indickou kytaru veenu a konnakol a indický způsob scatovaného rytmického zpěvu, který diváci v Brně slyšeli v podání bubeníka Ranjita Barota. Na přelomu 70. a 80. let se spojil s dalšími dvěma kytarovými virtuózy  Paco de Lucíou  a Larry Coryellem do The Guitar Tria. Když Coryella zakrátko vystřídal  Al di Meola, vzniklo koncertní turné a skvělá (opět přelomová) nahrávka Friday Night in San Francisco. Úspěch slavila i starší deska Passion, Grace & Fire.

Obsáhlá skladba předurčila atmosféru celého koncertu, v jehož průběhu se sidemani vynořovali k nádherným sólovým výstupům, zatímco frontman ustupoval stranou do stínu.

Výjimečné album Que Alegría nahrané v triu s perkusistou Trilokem Gurtu a basistou Dominiquem Di Piazzou z roku 1992 připomněla následující skladba Hijacked. Následující poklidně plynoucí nápěv The Creator Has A Master Plan (pro 4th Dimension zpracovaný na albu Invitation & Illumination v roce 2011) opět postupně rozezpíval muzikanty do mantry Happiness for Everyone , aby se pak vrhli do dynamické skladby Call and Answer z alba Now, Here, This (2012).

Živelnost hudebního dialogu vystřídala souhra v Light at the Edge of the World. Šestiminutová kompozice Echoes From Then nabíhala do ostinátních motivků zdvojovaných v kytaře v unisonu s klávesami opřenými o šlapající background bicích a basy. Virtuózní sólo na bicí podepíral Ranjit Barot zpěvem za pomoci indické zpěvní techniky konnakol  mající nejblíže k rytmickému scatu doplňovanému prudkými výdechy. V závěru setu nechal Mc Laughlin zaznít skladbu napsanou pro Milese Davise v roce 1972, kterou nahrál Mahavishnu Orchestra na album Birds of Fire pod názvem Miles Beyond.

Dlouhotrvající potlesk auditoria a zasloužené standing ovations si kapela s neskrývaně dojatým a nijak viditelně unaveným frotmanem užila s potěšením a posluchače odměnila jedním přídavkem a hlubokou úklonou s indickým pozdravem sepjatých rukou – namaste.

The latest concert in the Exposition of New Music festival, held yesterday at Brno’s Besední dům, was devoted entirely to piano music. It took listeners into the fascinating world of spectral music, the instrument’s internal acoustic structures and the phenomena of resonance. To bring the instrument’s hidden transformations of sound and natural inharmonicity fully to the fore, two different types of piano stood in the centre of the hall: a standard grand and a modified piano, with rubber inserts and beaters placed among the strings.  more

A deep dive into the world of spectral music, acoustic experimentation and free improvisation awaited audiences at a concert held on Tuesday at Brno’s Besední dům as part of the 38th Exposition of New Music festival, subtitled Ars Spectrum. The evening brought together three works exploring the limits of listening, the inner structure of sound and the interplay between the concert hall and the world outside. A defining feature of the concert was the unconventional use of space: rather than sitting on stage, the musicians were positioned in the middle of the hall, surrounded by the audience, microphones and loudspeakers.  more

As part of the 23rd edition of the early music concert series Barbara Maria Presents, a chamber concert devoted to Dvořák’s early songs took place on 1 October. The Brno audience had a unique opportunity to encounter Antonín Dvořák from a different perspective – not as the mature master of the great symphonies, but as a composer who, in the 1870s, was still experimenting and searching for his own musical language, while also exploring the foundations of effective Czech declamation. Soprano Martina Janková and harpsichordist, organist and fortepianist Barbara Maria Willi presented a programme of songs complemented by piano miniatures by Robert Schumann.  more

Brno Philharmonic opened its 2026/2027 concert season on Sunday 20 September at the Janáček Theatre. The orchestra was joined for the occasion by guest conductor Petr Altrichter, its former chief conductor. Under the motto All Roads Lead to Brno, this season’s repertoire brings together composers and musical events with connections to the city and its rich cultural life. The opening concert therefore featured Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, a particularly fitting choice given that Brahms performed as a pianist at Brno’s Reduta in 1867. The programme opened with César Franck’s symphonic poem Psyché, for which the orchestra was joined by the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno under the direction of Petr Fiala.  more
