The fifth year of the cycle Jazz & World Music opens with a concert by Matúš Jakabčic
A concert by Matúš Jakabčic and his quintet with the Brno Philharmonic opens the fifth year of the subscription concert cycle Jazz & World Music. The evening will include six pieces: from Jakabčic’s original works, through jazz standards to Bach’s Brandenburg concertos. The orchestra will perform under the baton of Pavel Šnajdr. more

The band WWW Neurobeat, after five years without an EP, has just brought out their new album Neutopíš se dvakrát řece (“You can’t drown in the same river twice”) and will be paying a visit to the Fléda club in Brno. Two singles from the album have been released so far – Pod nebem nebe (“Sky under the sky”) and Stát. The afterparty after the concert will be conducted by Dj Alyaz. more
The Design Team has just Presented a Visualisation of the Proposed Janáček Cultural Centre
The characteristic feature of the building of the Janáček Cultural Centre is duality; a linking of two structures in one building. One part is enclosed and fully given over to music while the second is transparent and open to people. This is how Tomasz Konior, general designer of the team that has worked on the design of the building since January this year with the acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota and architect Petr Hrůša, talks about the project for a new concert hall for Brno. They presented the results of their work today. more
Benefit Concert: Hana Holišová, Robert Jícha and others support children with oncological conditions
In a benefit concert in Brno’s Sono Centre young artists are supporting children with oncological conditions. The concert is being organised by the Společně k úsměvu (Smile Together) association, founded by former children’s oncology patients. The association supports families whose children are going through this disease, and also the newly founded outpatient department for the treatment of later effects in Brno. more

ProArt, led by Martin Dvořák is celebrating the birthday of the actress Marta Vančurová in Brno’s Tugendhat House. The poems of Jan Skácel will be heard interpreted by Marta Vančurová with a dance performance by Martin Dvořák. The musical accompaniment will be provided by the violin duo ECH! more
The Janáček Opera of the National Theatre Brno opens the season with a premiere of Smetana’s Libuše
The theme of the 2018/19 opera season is Dreams! The Janáček Opera of the National Theatre Brno is also celebrating the centenary of Czech statehood, as the first premiere of the season showing Smetana’s Libuše. The first premiere of the season will take place in Pavilion P, the largest at the Brno Exhibition Centre. more
Balladine begins the semester at a new address
The Balladine Dance School has a new base. It is opening the winter semester in the building on the corner of the streets Hilleho and tř. Kpt. Jaroše. This year’s timetable includes classical ballet for children and adults. Something new is the course Variations, led by Vendula Vlasáková. The offer of contemporary dance has been expanded to include a course for children. more
Musica Folklorica christens the album Smrti, milá smrti with Martin Hrbáč
Musica Folklorica is to perform in Brno’s Metro Music Bar. In the first part of the concert they will play pieces from their repertoire and in the second half of the programme they will be presenting songs from the album Smrti, milá smrti, which is being christened that evening. Martin Hrbáč will be performing as a guest. more
The final concert of this year’s instalment of the Barbara Maria Willi Presents series offered a unique project that on 4 December brought together two ensembles in the Convent of the Brothers of Mercy: Cappella Pratensis and Ramillete de Tonos. They showed the audience the many different ways in which one can work with the polyphonic repertoire of the 15th and 16th centuries. The programme intertwined sacred and secular music, and purely vocal, vocal-instrumental and purely instrumental pieces. more
The rediscovery and digitisation of the Brno polyphonic manuscripts BAM 1 and BAM 2 has opened a new chapter in the study and performance of Renaissance music. At the crossroads of historical research, modern technology, and artistic interpretation stands Past Forward, a cross-border project connecting institutions from the Netherlands, Belgium and the Czech Republic. At its artistic core are two musicians whose approaches complement each other: Tim Braithwaite, artistic director of Cappella Pratensis, and Kateřina Maňáková, lutenist, teacher of early plucked instruments at Janáček Academy of Performing Arts and guarantor of the entire initiative. In this conversation, they discuss working with previously overlooked sources, the challenges of historically informed performance, the promises of international collaboration, and their vision for the future of early-music interpretation. more
The concert by Filharmonie Brno under Dennis Russell Davies on Thursday 6 November in Besední dům offered a fascinating programme combining the work of two contemporary composers from the former Soviet Union. The performers included Armenian baritone Aksel Daveyan, violist Julian Veverica, percussionist Lukáš Krejčí, and the Austrian Hard-Chor Linz choir under choirmaster Alexander Koller. more
Brno-born pianist and Director General of the Czech Philharmonic, David Mareček, is appearing together with cellist Václav Petr on a concert tour in South Korea. During the first week of November, the duo is presenting Czech repertoire on prestigious stages, including the Seogwipo Arts Center, Yongin Poeun Art Hall and Daegu Concert House. more
Moravian Autumn, organised by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, has long been one of the most important musical events of the autumn season. For the third time it also included the student project New World of Moravian Autumn – living proof that the connection between academia and professional practice can yield stimulating and deeply artistic results. This project, which originated at JAMU as an experiment within the course in practical dramaturgy, has evolved into a fully-fledged and respected part of the festival programme over the past few years. more
