Brno will be dancing to the sound of samba and other Brazilian rhythms next week. Brasil Fest Brno, the largest festival of Brazilian culture in Central Europe, will run for four days. Already on Friday, fans of Brazilian culture can look forward to the legendary band Nação Zumbi at the První patro club.
“They are one of the most influential bands on the Brazilian scene and are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. They blend funk, rock, maracatu, psychedelia and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. It will be a high-energy concert,” says the festival director, Jakub Škrha. On Saturday, there will be a traditional spectacular carnival parade through the city centre with free accompanying activities at five locations in the centre of Brno. “We want to get a little closer to the atmosphere of the Brazilian carnival in Rio and show people how breathtaking carnival culture can be. The concerts and drum and dance show will last until midnight,” says the festival director. He will be drawing on fresh inspiration, because earlier this year, he participated in the world's largest carnival as a drummer, and was even in one of the winning bands. Dancer and Star Dance winner Veronika Lálová was also in Rio, and is once again preparing special choreography for the Brno festival. The festival will run from 31 July to 3 August 2025.
Hundreds of participants from all over Europe and Latin America will be joining the parade. "It will also feature stars from abroad, led by repique master Gabriel Policarpo and dancer Luara Bombom, Primeira Princesa do Carnaval do Rio 2022," Škrha says. There will also be an allegorical float referencing Rio de Janeiro, along with a five-metre puppet of the Brno dragon in Brazilian colours that will be making its début this year. The involvement of the energetic Brazilian frevo brass section is new this year.
Before the parade sets off from Moravian Square through Freedom Square to the Vegetable Market, people can enjoy a première of the programme in the carnival warm-up zone by the statue of Jošt in Moravian Square. Among other things, there will be a make-up session for all those who want to fully experience the atmosphere.
The festival will also feature complementary events. On Thursday, it will open at the summer cinema at Špilberk with the Oscar-winning film I'm Still Here. On Friday, guitarist and singer Badi Assad will perform at the Red Church. The festival will close on Sunday with a family day with free workshops for children and adults in Lužánky. The programme will feature dance, music and creative workshops, including the making of costumes and masks, which the children will then present at the first ever children's carnival parade in Lužánky. International stars Gabriel Policarpo and Luara Bombom will also lead two exclusive workshops.
