Christmas markets to open with a tree lighting ceremony with Brno City Theatre

Brno Christmas, organised by TIC BRNO, will begin this year on Friday 21 November. On náměstí Svobody, Dominikánské náměstí and in the courtyard of the Old Town Hall, visitors can look forward to an Advent full of lights, music and new surprises. The opening will unfold as a Christmas story brought to life by actors from Brno City Theatre. The 'Ordinary–Extraordinary Family', known from this year’s Brno Christmas posters by illustrator Tomáš SMOT Svoboda, will guide us through the festive afternoon.

"Actors and singers from Brno City Theatre will host the ceremonial afternoon and early evening. Alongside the ‘Ordinary–Extraordinary Brno Family’, children from the Musical School attached to Brno City Theatre will also bring us a Christmas gift, the wandering Crocodile Bruno will switch on the tree, and the entire programme will conclude with a concert by soloists from Brno City Theatre," revealed Stanislav Slovák, Artistic Director of Drama and director at Brno City Theatre. The Christmas tree will be lit at 5:00 p.m., officially launching Brno Christmas 2025. Brno Christmas will run from 21 November to 23 December 2025.

"This year, TIC BRNO is planning a Brno Christmas on a similar scale as last year, when we celebrated the title of European Capital of Christmas. There were a lot of innovations then and this year, with sustainability in mind, we are focusing on improving the visitor experience. I’m pleased that children are at the centre of attention this time, and the biggest new feature is the creation of a calm area for (grand)parents with children. A Magical Forest will spring up in the courtyard of the New Town Hall, a place to rest with a natural visual aesthetic, developed in collaboration with French artist Aude Martin and sculptor Filip Bednár. All the elements will be designed in a fairy-tale, magical style, expressed through figurative, sculptural and graphic design," said Kristýna Černá, Councillor for Tourism.

Visitors can once again look forward to the video gateway, which this year will symbolically connect Brno with its partner city Poznań in Poland. This special “telebridge” will offer an unconventional international Christmas experience – linking not only the markets but also the cultures and atmosphere of the two cities. A trio of musicians, Ciepłe Brejki, will travel from Poznań to Brno to add a touch of diversity to the cultural programme on náměstí Svobody. The partnership with Poznań is also a natural continuation of international destination communication under Brno True Story, for which TIC BRNO is responsible and where Poland is one of the key markets.

For the third year, the Gourmet Christmas project continues in the courtyard of the Old Town Hall, but this time the culinary experience will include three stalls of international cuisine on Dominikánské náměstí. Visitors will be able to travel the world with their taste buds without ever leaving Brno.

There is much more for families with children to look forward to. On náměstí Svobody, the Christmas village with child-sized stalls has been moved closer to the Christmas tree, offering a play space where children can freely explore and use their imagination. On Dominikánské náměstí, not far from the popular nativity scene, the Christmas “šalina” tram will once again be running, while the courtyard of the New Town Hall will see visitors welcomed to the new Magical Forest.  From there it’s just a short walk to the Cellar beneath the New Town Hall, where a rich Advent programme awaits.

This year, Brno Christmas will once again demonstrate why Brno is a UNESCO City of Music. On náměstí Svobody alone, a total of 91 concerts and performances will take place across 33 days — from stars such as Kateřina Marie Tichá, Vojta Kotek, Berenika Kohoutová and the bands Zrní, Vesna, Lake Malawi and Midi Lidi, to the discoveries of the year and students from Brno's art schools. The programme will bring a vibrant mix of genres - from indie and jazz to world music, punk, swing, gospel and electronica, all the way to Christmas classics, including Jakub Jan Ryba's Czech Christmas Mass. The romantic courtyard of the Old Town Hall will also host a DJ stage, where every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evening, DJ sets are guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing.  Brno Christmas will offer a musical mosaic connecting seasoned performers, young talents, dance music and that festive Advent atmosphere.

Christmas doesn't have to be just about hustle and bustle, crowds and long queues for punch. Sometimes you also need to slow down, take a breather and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. This idea gives rise to a new event, A Quiet Day with Early, to be held on 3 December on náměstí Svobody. On this day there will be no concerts on the square, nothing will be amplified, and the programme for children and adults alike will offer ways to engage senses other than hearing. The afternoon will be opened by the non-profit organisation Tichý svět (Silent World), from 5 p.m. visitors of all ages can explore five stations that test their tenses, and at 7 in the evening everyone there will gather for a communal sing-song.

The cycle of classical music concerts directed by its founder, Barbara Maria Willi, has been an integral part of cultural events in the Moravian capital for twenty-three years. The audience in Brno has already been introduced to a number of  outstanding personalities and ensembles with whom Barbara Maria Willi regularly cooperates. This year's opening concert, traditionally held on Wednesday, 11 February, in the hall of the Convent of the Merciful Brothers with a subtitle Music in Motion offered a combination of the art of the fortepiano with flute played by Sofia Mavrogenidou and accompanied by young dancers Klementýna Anna Špičková and Adam Mišo, choreographed by David Strnadmore

The final concert of this year’s instalment of the Barbara Maria Willi Presents series offered a unique project that on 4 December brought together two ensembles in the Convent of the Brothers of Mercy:  Cappella Pratensis and Ramillete de Tonos. They showed the audience the many different ways in which one can work with the polyphonic repertoire of the 15th and 16th centuries. The programme intertwined sacred and secular music, and purely vocal, vocal-instrumental and purely instrumental pieces.  more

The rediscovery and digitisation of the Brno polyphonic manuscripts BAM 1 and BAM 2 has opened a new chapter in the study and performance of Renaissance music. At the crossroads of historical research, modern technology, and artistic interpretation stands Past Forward, a cross-border project connecting institutions from the Netherlands, Belgium and the Czech Republic. At its artistic core are two musicians whose approaches complement each other: Tim Braithwaite, artistic director of Cappella Pratensis, and Kateřina Maňáková, lutenist, teacher of early plucked instruments at Janáček Academy of Performing Arts and guarantor of the entire initiative. In this conversation, they discuss working with previously overlooked sources, the challenges of historically informed performance, the promises of international collaboration, and their vision for the future of early-music interpretation.  more

The concert by Filharmonie Brno under Dennis Russell Davies on Thursday 6 November in Besední dům offered a fascinating programme combining the work of two contemporary composers from the former Soviet Union. The performers included Armenian baritone Aksel Daveyan, violist Julian Veverica, percussionist Lukáš Krejčí, and the Austrian Hard-Chor Linz choir under choirmaster Alexander Koller.  more

Brno-born pianist and Director General of the Czech Philharmonic, David Mareček, is appearing together with cellist Václav Petr on a concert tour in South Korea. During the first week of November, the duo is presenting Czech repertoire on prestigious stages, including the Seogwipo Arts Center, Yongin Poeun Art Hall and Daegu Concert House.  more
