Musical-Operetta Magazine Awards 2025: The Winners Are Announced

At the twelfth edition of the Dokořán Festival of Music Theatre organised by the Brno City Theatre, the results of the Musical-Operetta Magazine Awards – the only professional awards in the field – were traditionally announced.

From the stage of the Music Hall, audiences were first welcomed by the festival’s head dramaturg Jan Šotkovský, who was soon joined by the editor-in-chief of Musical-Operetta Magazine Vítězslav Sladký; together the two gentlemen then announced the winners in the individual categories for 2025.

This year’s edition once again saw the established and proven vote-gathering format in operation: the winners in the three main categories – Favourite Actor, Favourite Actress, and Favourite Production of 2025 – are determined by audiences and readers through online voting at musical-opereta.cz. The second set of laureates in the same three categories is then determined directly by the expert jury of critics, who also award the Bard of the Music Theatre for the given year. And we are thrilled that a total of three winners from the Brno City Theatre emerged from both types of voting!

The audience’s Favourite Production was the theatre’s own original musical work Winton by Daniel Kyzlink and Luděk Kašparovský, for which the award was accepted by its director Petr Gazdík, who in his acceptance speech recognised both authors and other members of the production team and cast.

The winner in the Favourite Actor category was Jozef Hruškoci as Maxim de Winter in the musical Rebecca at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň, who in his acceptance speech fondly recalled his earlier guest appearances on the Music Stage of the Brno City Theatre.

Favourite Actress – and simultaneously the laureate with the greatest number of audience votes – was Charlotte Režná for her portrayal of Self (Já), the second award for the Plzeň production of the musical Rebecca.

The fifth edition of the Štetl Fest of Jewish culture in Brno began on Wednesday, 26 August. And the very first day had a great deal to offer. Among other things, it showed that even an alternative theatre venue can host a world-class concert – and one that is free of charge. The opening ceremony featured a performance by the band Der Šenster Gob, with Jewish singer Lea Kalisch, in the courtyard of the Husa na provázku theatre.  more

The concert also marked a symbolic farewell to trombonist Jiří Vydra, who brought his 45-year career with the Brno Philharmonic to a close that evening.  more
