Following last year’s inaugural edition, the Rousínov Music Festival returns for a second year, opening today at the Church of St Philip and St James with the local Danielis Choir. Once again, the festival will bring a range of interesting performers to the town and offer audiences several evenings of live music.
The festival opens this evening, Sunday, 13 September at 5 pm, at the Church of St Philip and St James in Rousínov. The concert will feature the Danielis Choir together with the Antonín Tučapský Choir. The programme will combine Moravian musical traditions with works by Bohuslav Martinů, Leoš Janáček and Jiří Pavlica.
On Friday, 18 September at 7 pm, Art Pilgrims Duo will perform in the former synagogue. Cellist and concertmaster of the Brno Philharmonic Lukáš Polák and guitarist Ľubomír Kopkáš will present contemporary chamber music inspired by folk traditions and the energy of Latin American rhythms. The programme will also include a work by Ľubomír Kopkáš himself.
On Sunday, 20 September at 5 pm, Pravoslav Březík will showcase the newly restored organ at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in a programme inspired by the theme of water. Works will include Smetana’s The Moldau and Liszt’s monumental Fantasy and Fugue.
On Friday, 25 September at 8 pm, the park behind Záložna will become the setting for Katana, a music-theatre production. Ensemble MiDiversa, made up of students from ZUŠ Veveří, together with students from ZUŠ Slunná Brno, will perform music from Kill Bill live, while the story of a sacred sword, loss and revenge is told through dance, shadow theatre and narration. The result is an approximately 50-minute performance that combines elements of concert, cinema and theatre – accessible, playful and visually striking, and suitable for younger audiences too.
The festival will close on Sunday, 27 September at 5 pm at the Church of St Wenceslas with Diversa Quartet. Led by violinist Jan Bělohlávek, the Brno chamber ensemble will perform international repertoire alongside works by contemporary Moravian composers, including a string quartet by Ondřej Kyas and the world premiere of a work by Pavel Nesit.
The main festival programme will also include a guided architectural walk through Rousínov with conservation specialist Petr Bařinka on Saturday, 26 September at 3 pm. Participants will learn more about the advanced restoration of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, the Stará pošta building and the Chapel of St Florian.
