September 2026 Cultural Newsletter from the Culture Department of the BCM

8 September 2026, 14:00

Brno’s cultural newsletter brings you an overview of upcoming events and opportunities relating to theatres, clubs and other cultural activities in the city.

Dear friends of Brno culture,

Astronomically, at least, the picture is clear, even if temperatures are still mostly pushing 30 °C... Whether September will continue to feel more like summer, even if only an Indian summer, or bring a more lasting spell of cooler weather is impossible to predict. One thing, however, is certain: autumn in Brno will definitely be creative.

On Thursday, 24 September, the Creative Brno Festival, formerly Brno Creative Days, will launch at Boldhalle under its new name. Over the course of four weeks, it will bring together eleven events under one umbrella, organised by different parts of Brno’s creative scene and supported by the city. The programme will offer inspiration for professionals and the general public alike, ranging from festivals and conferences to open studios and a design market. Prototyp will also be part of the programme, once again bringing together art, science and technology. This year, in an expanded format, its striking light installations will also move out into the streets. I’m also personally looking forward to the experiential programmes for Káznice, which their creators will present at the end of the festival.

The new theatre and music season is also getting fully under way, and the first announcements make it clear that we once again have plenty to look forward to. Alongside new projects and cultural experiences, September also brings a number of important deadlines, including the deadline for cultural grant applications, to which I’d particularly like to draw your attention.

You’ll find further details, invitations and other news from Brno’s cultural life in this issue of the newsletter.

Wishing you a colourful and inspiring cultural autumn!

Markéta Vaňková
Mayor of Brno

Competition for an artwork dedicated to Lucie Bakešová closes on 21 September

The competition is open to individual artists and creative teams who would like to design a dignified, contemporary artwork in honour of this remarkable woman. Entries can be submitted until 21 September 2026.

Villa Bohéma: join us for a reading by Rachel Cholz

On Monday, 21 September at 5.30 pm, French writer Rachel Cholz, a participant in the international Villa Bohéma residency programme, will give a reading in the DOMINI PARK conference room on Husova. The Statutory City of Brno works on the programme together with the French Institute in Prague, the Moravian Library, Maison des Écritures in La Rochelle and the Czech Centre in Paris. Cholz will introduce her work, which moves between fiction, reality and poetry, using language to connect these seemingly distant worlds. During the evening, she will read short extracts from her book. The gathering will offer a unique insight into her creative process.

The event will be interpreted into Czech. Admission is free.

Brno Cultural Forum will focus on the younger generation in November

Save the date: 11 November 2026. The next Brno Cultural Forum will take place at the CO.LABS cultural centre, this time focusing on culture and creativity through the eyes of young people. But we don’t want to talk about young people without involving them. That’s why this time we’ve opened up the programme planning directly to arts students. Through an open call, they can help shape the forum, present their own projects and share their experiences. The open call runs until 15 September 2026. If you are an arts student and would like to take part, there is still time to get involved. Contact us at majickova.veronika@brno.cz.

The tenth edition of the international opera and music festival Janáček Brno 2026 will take place from 13 October to 17 November 2026. With Janáček’s complete operatic output at its heart, alongside a programme of concerts and accompanying events, the festival offers a unique celebration of the composer’s work on an international scale. As part of the festival preview, National Theatre Brno is presenting four operas by Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) ahead of the festival itself. The series began on Saturday, 5 September, with The Makropulos Affair, which also opened Brno’s 2026/27 opera season.  more

The fifth edition of the Štetl Fest of Jewish culture in Brno began on Wednesday, 26 August. And the very first day had a great deal to offer. Among other things, it showed that even an alternative theatre venue can host a world-class concert – and one that is free of charge. The opening ceremony featured a performance by the band Der Šenster Gob, with Jewish singer Lea Kalisch, in the courtyard of the Husa na provázku theatre.  more

The summer open-air Festival Špilberk, organised by the Brno Philharmonic, brought classical music and other genres to the grand courtyard of Brno’s Špilberk Castle during the third week of August. The festival’s 27th edition culminated on Sunday, 23 August, with Carl Orff’s cantata Carmina Burana, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies with the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno. The concert also marked a symbolic farewell to trombonist Jiří Vydra, who brought his 45-year career with the Brno Philharmonic to a close that evening.  more

The Špilberk Festival organised by the Brno Philharmonic has put together a rich programme for the third week of August. This year’s 27th edition of the traditional open-air festival will once again fill the grand castle courtyard with music, with the aim of making classical music accessible even during the summer holidays. Tenor Štefan Margita chose this occasion to celebrate his 70th birthday. Together with soprano Jana Šrejma Kačírková and conductor Jan Kučera, Margita presented a concert of opera and musical arias on Saturday, 22 August.  more

Every year, ahead of the new concert season, the Brno Philharmonic organises the week-long open-air Špilberk Festival in the great courtyard of Brno’s Špilberk Castle, featuring a diverse programme of genres and ensembles.  On Thursday, 20 August, the festival project entitled Erik Truffaz & Gustav Brom Czech Radio Big Band: Around Miles was performed to commemorate the centenary of the birth of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. This third concert in the series was co-produced with JazzFest Brno and Czech Radio and broadcast live on Czech Radio’s Vltava station.  more
