The Janáček Opera of the National Theatre Brno Returns to the Courtyard of Špilberk Castle This Summer

Opera Summer 2026 opens in the great courtyard of Špilberk Castle with Aida, starring Csilla Boross in the title role. Three more operas will follow.

Aida, scheduled for 1 July 2026, is one of Verdi’s masterworks and lacks none of the guaranteed elements of Romantic Italian opera – love, jealousy, political intrigue, great choral scenes, and the inevitable tragic death. All this, and of course the celebrated triumphal march, will fill Špilberk with the energy of ancient Egypt.

On 2 July, the beautiful Violetta (Jana Sibera) from Verdi’s opera La Traviata will make her way to the castle. The timeless tragic tale of a courtesan who dares to hope for the happiness of true love. For a brief moment it seems so close, but it is only a dream. A chamber drama in the classic staging of Zbyněk Srba.

In August, the courtyard will ignite with a passionate performance of Carmen, starring Jana Hrochová in the title role. Bizet’s score blends French elegance with the fiery passion of Spain. The famous arias “Habanera” and Escamillo’s “Toreador’s Song” are known and loved by all.

This year’s opera summer concludes with a performance of Verdi’s Nabucco with its celebrated choruses and the outstanding Aleš Jenis in the title role. The production by Jiří Heřman offers a compelling look at the story of the Babylonian king and the Jewish people. At its centre are family relationships and King Nebuchadnezzar himself.

Programme:

1 July 2026 – Giuseppe Verdi: AIDA

2 July 2026 – Giuseppe Verdi: LA TRAVIATA

29 August 2026 – Georges Bizet: CARMEN

30 August 2026 – Giuseppe Verdi: NABUCCO
