The Faculty of Music at JAMU regularly presents a specially curated student program to audiences at the Janáček Festival, showcasing student artistic activities in an unconventional format. Moreover, the event offers a glimpse into the specific environments of various study disciplines—spaces typically unseen by the average concertgoer. Attendees thus have the opportunity not only to hear performances by young artists but also to explore different parts of the faculty—ranging from the JAMU concert hall and student stage areas to truly unconventional locations, including the school’s corridors—all accompanied by the music of these young artists.

Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor "Dumky", Op. 90, composed in 1890–1891, ranks among the most original and beloved works in Antonín Dvořák’s (1841–1904) chamber music repertoire. While the composer had adhered to the classical sonata form in his earlier trios, here he departed from it entirely to create a unique six-movement cycle based on the *dumka*—a Ukrainian dance characterized by abrupt shifts in mood. The composition captivates the listener with the contrast between pensive, melancholic passages and unbridled, rhythmically spirited joy. It is precisely this emotional volatility and deep grounding in folk inspiration that make the "Dumky" a work of immense inner strength, in which Dvořák masterfully blended his melodic inventiveness with an unconventional musical structure.

Leoš Janáček’s (1854–1928) String Quartet No. 1 "Kreutzer Sonata" (inspired by Leo Tolstoy) dates from 1923. However, its origins trace back to 1908, when Janáček composed a Piano Trio—now lost—inspired by the same short story by Tolstoy. Its protagonist is a woman terrorized by her despotic and pathologically jealous husband, at whose hands she is ultimately tormented to death. "I had in mind a poor woman—tormented, beaten, beaten to death," said Janáček, describing a motif that runs like a common thread through many of his other works. With its passionate expression, the quartet penetrates to the very core of human emotion and into the most intimate realms of the human soul. The work achieved success soon after its 1924 premiere and, even after more than a century, remains one of the most compelling pieces in the quartet genre.

The complete presentation of Janáček’s operas during the festival’s 10th edition offers a unique opportunity not only to enjoy his masterpieces but also to discover works rarely seen on stage today. Alongside Janáček’s debut, *Šárka*, these include his second opera, *The Beginning of a Romance* (*Počátek románu*), a piece strongly influenced by the period when the composer was deeply interested in folklore. The libretto was based on a short story of the same name by Gabriela Preissová—herself inspired by a genre painting by Jaroslav Věšín—and was written by Janáček’s colleague from the grammar school, František Rypáček (publishing under the name Jaromír Tichý), after Eliška Krásnohorská had declined the task.

The simple love story of Poluška, a village girl, and Adolf, a young man from the gentry—a romance that meets with disapproval from Adolf’s parents—is filled with music derived from Janáček’s own transcriptions of folk music. Janáček himself described the opera as a *vaudeville*, a genre characterized by a simple plot accompanied by popular (i.e., folk) tunes—in this case, including folk dances. The premiere, conducted by the composer himself, took place in Brno on February 10, 1894, and brought Janáček his first theatrical success. By that time, however, he was already working on *Jenůfa* (*Její pastorkyňa*); in that work, he discovered a distinctive musical language and ultimately embarked on a path vastly different from the one outlined in *The Beginning of a Romance*.

A band from Brno that defined its own unique sound—blending funk, rock, and crossover—during the 1990s is returning to the stage. New musicians have joined members of the original lineup, seamlessly carrying on the band's signature energy.

Their live performances prove that their groove has lost none of its power—quite the opposite. At this year’s anniversary concert at the Mahen Theatre, it was clear from the very first notes that this was no ordinary show and that the band was performing with even greater cohesion and strength than ever before.

Especially for Groove Brno, they are preparing a concert featuring an expanded lineup that includes a horn section—presenting Narvan in a unique format you won't see anywhere else.

Music rooted in flamenco and Mediterranean energy has evolved over the years into a global phenomenon. Songs such as "Bamboleo," "Djobi Djoba," "Baila Me," and "Volare" resonate across generations and continents today.

The project is led by co-founder Diego Baliardo, who carries on the band's legacy alongside a new generation of musicians. With over 20 million albums sold, a Grammy Award for *Savor Flamenco*, and concerts worldwide, the Gipsy Kings have long since transcended the boundaries of world music.

The Magic Flute
In Spanish, the word *coloquio* means "conversation." In the outstanding wind sextet Coloquio 6, six young virtuoso musicians engage in a musical conversation, viewing music as an ongoing dialogue and an exchange of ideas and emotions—both among themselves and with the audience. We will hear the distinctive and captivating sound of this wind ensemble for the first time in our series, and we will dive straight into Mozart: a selection of arias from his famous *The Magic Flute* will be performed in a historical arrangement by Johann Christian Stumpf for two clarinets, two French horns, and two bassoons.

In cooperation with HF JAMU and MHF Concentus Moraviae, and as part of the S-EEEmerging project.

The Crocodile Orchestra will mark November 17th with a celebratory concert at the Besední dům.

Commemorate the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy and International Students' Day with a special concert at the Besední dům in Brno. The Crocodile Orchestra will join forces with renowned soloists—pianist Igor Ardašev and violinist Milan Al-Ashhab—to present an exceptional musical evening dedicated to the legacy of the events of November 1939 and 1989.

The program will open with Suk’s *Meditation on the Old Czech Chorale "St. Wenceslas,"* a symbol of national unity. This will be followed by Mendelssohn’s *Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Orchestra in D minor*, in which the virtuosity of the two soloists will blend with the energy of the young musicians. The celebratory evening will culminate in Suk’s *Serenade in E-flat major*, bringing an atmosphere of hope and optimism to the Besední dům.

A lecture by Prof. Jan Jiraský titled "How to Play Mozart." The event will take place at the Faculty of Music, JAMU (Komenského nám. 6).

Final concert of the Amadeus International Piano Competition laureates at Besední dům. Admission: 100 CZK for adults; free for children and students. Duration: approx. 60 minutes.

The Jazzchat is the natural evolution of the band Jazzycats, following about five years of gradual development, lineup changes, and repertoire shifts. Our ensemble consists of vocals/flute, saxophone/violin, and a rhythm section of piano, double bass, and drums; we primarily perform jazz standards from the 1920s through the 1970s. We frequently perform in clubs and on smaller festival stages, but we also enjoy what we call "gastro-jazz"—music perfectly suited for parties, celebrations, weddings, and similar events. We don’t insist that the audience watch us intently from the first note to the last; as long as people are having a good time, that’s all that matters.

The concert will feature a guest performance by the Tereza Svojtková Trio.

An exclusive collaboration between the virtuoso trio Inflagranti and two iconic singers from the Czech music scene promises an evening filled with both elegance and musical energy.

On December 5th, Bobyhall will host a performance featuring unique arrangements of global hits and festive songs. The blend of classical instruments with the distinctive voices of Bára Basiková and Ilona Csáková creates a truly one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

The tradition of this celebratory drumming event began spontaneously 20 years ago, when the highly anticipated "end of the world"—slated for Saturday, December 22, 2012—failed to materialize. To express their joy that our beautiful blue planet was continuing its journey through the universe, about 30 people gathered at Café Práh in Brno to play drums.

Since then, this celebratory event—featuring the djembe and similar instruments—has taken place regularly, held on the Tuesdays closest to the spring and autumn equinoxes, as well as the summer and winter solstices.
For those who do not own an instrument, Martin Maleček (owner of the company Masada) and Marek Pečer (organizer of the Krumlov Djembe Marathon) provide instruments available for loan.
On Tuesday, December 20, 2022, the 41st and final gathering of the initial 10-year period following the "end of the world"—organized by Vilda Dvořák—took place. Marek Pečer has since taken over the organization of these drumming sessions at Café Práh. Life goes on...

The period of eager anticipation leading up to Christmas will be enlivened for the concert series audience by the diverse Renaissance *ensaladas* composed in the early 16th century by the Catalan musician Mateo Flecha the Elder. His works offer not only musical entertainment but also significant insight into the rich tradition of Spanish polyphony and its capacity for storytelling through metaphor. They will be performed in the Convent by the outstanding SILENTIUM! ensemble—a group that burst onto the domestic early music scene last year like a long-awaited musical fountain. The evening concludes with a traditional social gathering, offering subscribers and audience members the chance to enjoy a glass of wine (courtesy of series supporter Stanislav Mádl) and bid farewell to the past season together with Barbara Maria Willi.

After years away, BOY returns to the local stage. On Saturday, December 19, at Kabinet MÚZ in Brno, the band will perform a set featuring older tracks alongside material from their new album, *Enemies of the Light*, which is being released via Voltage Records.

For this special evening, the core trio—Martino, Kelso, and Olda—will be joined by Norwegian collaborators who also feature on the new record: Tommy Akerholdt (Turbonegro) on drums and Johan Larsson (OnklP) on bass. Larsson also served as the producer for the entire new album.

And the special lineup doesn't stop there.
