chamber musical

The authors of this chamber musical, Brian Yorkey (libretto and lyrics) and Tom Kitt (music), are known to our audience thanks to the popular comedy Fright Friday, which we presented in the European premiere and recorded 50 reruns on our stage. Similar to Frightful Friday, it also tells the NOT/NORMAL story of one family. Daughter Natalie experiences her first love and encounters obstacles and problems with her parents Diana and Dan. They are dealing with their own relationship, and they are still coping with the long-ago tragic loss of their young son. Up to this point, it would have been a completely ordinary story if Diana did not suffer from bipolar disorder, an illness that naturally affects all family events.

The American rock musical premiered on Broadway on May 15, 2009, won three Tony Awards out of eleven nominations, and in 2010, as one of the few musical titles, was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize precisely because it deals with topics in the field of musical theater that they are not quite usual for him. A very intimate story featuring only the characters' closest family circle (and several doctors to whom Diana seeks help) opens up topics such as depression, drug abuse, medical ethics, parental hopelessness and partner crisis. However, all of this takes place at the brisk pace of contemporary rock music, and the authors lighten the story with frequent use of dark humor.

Since its Broadway premiere and subsequent US tour, the play has been performed all over the world. In the Czech Republic, it premiered at the Theater Na Prádle, for which it was translated by our permanent collaborator Zuzana Čtveráčková. We are now presenting the musical at the Drama Theater directed by Petr Gazdík.

Warning: Tobacco products are used in the performance.

Of course, smoking is not allowed in the public areas of the Brno City Theatre. In the case of the use of tobacco products on stage as part of a prescribed acting event, it is a work of art that enjoys the protection of inviolability within the meaning of copyright law. The cigarette is thus considered a prop. The use of cigarettes, including electronic ones, in performances that have already been performed is considered an artistic effect that cannot yet be replaced otherwise. It is not about smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products, but about the artistic rendering of this activity.
