Chris Newman, an English artist, composer, artist and poet working in Germany, became famous mainly for his own song cycles, which he himself interprets in a raspy "punk" voice. Some critics refer to him as the "Schubert of today", and this is certainly not an unwarranted honor.
Straightforward music with sometimes explicit lyrics characterizes most of Newman's music. Her performance practice itself illustrates why Newman's music has sometimes been described as "willfully bad".
