CHRISTIAN SANDS TRIO

28/02/24, 19:00

Pianist Christian Sands is a company player of the Steinway brand, and not only because of that, the environment of the Besední dom, dominated by two D-series instruments of this renowned manufacturer, will suit him perfectly. However, in order for the almost three-meter wing to sound properly, you need skilled fingers. That's exactly what Christian Sands, a native of Connecticut and a renowned post-bop "giver", has.
He made his name as a twenty-something alongside renowned bandleaders, toured and recorded for many years with Christian McBride's bands Inside Straight and Trio, collaborated with Gregory Porter, Geri Allen, Esperanza Spalding and many others. In parallel, he devoted himself to his own music, in which even today he tastefully combines deep jazz roots with contemporary music with an emphasis on so-called "Black American Music", i.e. blues, R´n´B, gospel and hip hop. He released his third solo album "Be Water" in the summer of 2020 and received a Grammy Award nomination for it despite all the covid troubles. The album deals with the calm power of water and the playing of Christian Sands sounds similar. On the one hand, he can meander with harmonies, on the other, he can calmly break down musical barriers or spin the band's interplay like turbine blades. The music from this recording will dominate the repertoire for tonight. Sands will be accompanied by his longtime bandmates Yasushi Nakamura (double bass) and Clarence Penn (drums).
