In their ninth year of existence, Puerto Flamenco pursue the challenge of addressing relevant contemporary issues, whilst remaining true to the essence of the flamenco genre. With ISLA the company take another step forward in establishing their trademark blend of grassroots flamenco and contemporary stage design and direction.

This production revolves around the central theme of isla or island. A non-narrative work, ISLA proposes varied interpretations of the island concept, from the satirical pre-apocalyptic shrinking of theterra firma, in a physical, socio-economical and spiritual sense, via the western society’s unyielding efforts to contradict John Donne’s ‘no man is an island’, to, on some level,  paying a subtle homage to company director’s home island of Malta.

A commentary on the individualization of our society at large, the cold-heartedness of the elite, the pirated identities under surveillance. A concern for flamenco too, a genre going through its own transformations, the communal and visceral being swept away by the flood of the over-intellectualized postmodern irony. It was recently named the world heritage treasure by UNESCO, a long-awaited recognition of the universal nature and global relevance of this Andalucian art form, which Miles Davis described as “the only music that makes me fall on my knees”.
