Post-war Czechoslovakia became a world quartet superpower with the help of contributions by the Janáček Quartet in Brno. Its program today includes a work, with which Vítězslav Novák crossed the fateful threshold of the twentieth century, on the one hand, and Beethoven’s last quartet, in which the aging composer posed the question “Must that be?”,whose three tones have been repeated in international music since that time as a question pertaining to the sense of human existence.
