The Concentus Moraviae Quartet has been assembled especially for this year’s festival by the violinist, Josef Špaček, from the ranks of his excellent classmates from America. For their first concert, they have prepared Luboš Fišer’s enigmatic Variations on an unknown theme, Beethoven’s technically brilliant, yet still poetic D major quartet and Brahms’ little-heard G major string quartet, in which the strict and usually sombre composer captured experiences from Vienna’s Prater with irresistible humour: the playing of the barrel organ, the fiddling bandmaster and melancholic sobs in inappropriate harmonies.
