Franz Schubert: String Quartet No. 14 D minor “Death and the Maiden“ arranged for string orchestra by Gustav Mahler
Gustav Mahler succeeded in enhancing the effect of two of the most dramatic works in the Viennese quartet repertoire by scoring them for string orchestra. Beethoven’s opus 95 and Schubert’s Death and the Maiden quartet have therefore found their place among the monumental orchestral dramas and they will enrich the festival’s official finale when performed by the musicians of the Czech Philharmonic.
