Claudio Monteverdi’s Selva Morale et Spirituale is a late work from 1640/41 and presents a kind of antithesis to the early revolutionary Vespers of the Blessed Virgin (1610). Monteverdi presents in Selva his supreme art and summarizes his artistic life. It is not only a collection of religious music, but first of all a musical monument presenting the best of Monteverdi’s art and anticipating the future development of European music.
