A children’s opera based on ‘The Magic Flute’ by W.A. Mozart

Children’s projects play a very important part in the repertoire of the Janáček Opera. After a series of successful workshops for children and young adults, the opera company has prepared a delightful production, Papageno Plays the Magic Flute, designed specifically for our youngest audience members. The composer is the German director and dramaturgist, Eberhard Streul, who in 1980 was invited to the National Theatre in Mannheim to adapt Mozart’s The Magic Flute into a children’s show.

Accompanied by the cheerful bird catcher Papageno, the children are taken on a journey of a tale of love between Prince Tamino and the beautiful Pamina. They help to free the captured Pamina, thanks to the magic flute and Papageno is united with his one love, Papagena. The opera, which in Germany enjoyed great success, is staged here in the Czech Republic for the first time. The stage direction is led by the young director and stage designer, Tomáš Pilař, who finished his studies in opera direction in 2011 at the prestigious Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) with a very successful production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

A children's opera based on a fairy tale full of magic spells, feathers and adventure. This performance is suitable for children aged four to nine.
