On Friday and Saturday, Brno’s Obřany will come alive with culture. The 9th edition of the ObrFest open-air festival will take place for the second time at several locations on the outskirts of the city. Audiences will be able to attend more than two dozen concerts of independent music - performers include Amelia Siba with Kryštof Kříček, Hrubá Hudba or Midi Lidi, there will be theatres for children and adults, and a rich literary and accompanying program.

The complete agenda offers a mix of established names from the Czech independent scene, as well as those just emerging. On Friday, the main stage will lure visitors to the eco-disco-punk of Koně a Prase, one of the most prominent faces of the contemporary alternative scene, Amelia Siba, who will present her third album with Kryštof Kříček, or the legendary electro-pop band Midi Lidi. Friday’s program in Zahrada u Sosny will be marked by the experimental post-rock band Tribe-J, the cosmic B4 and legends of Brno bigbeat Škaredá holka. At Na Kafaře, the festival will begin with the opening of Martina Trchová’s exhibition, followed by a concert by distinctive singer-songwriter Monika Midriaková - Summer with Monika, followed by a trio of ambient and experimental electronic projects. First, the winner of this year’s Vinyl Award, guitarist Tomáš Niesner, followed by the fyield and Shakali projects to close the evening program.

The biggest attractions of Saturday’s program are the mingling of nu-jazz and folklore, a joint project by the front men of the band Lesní zvěř and Horňácká muzika - Hrubá Hudba, the math-pop band Nvmeri, and legends of Czech electronic music Ohm Square. In the Garden at Sosna, visitors can look forward to the energetic Brno formation Levatadores, "the biggest hitmaker in Brno" Don Juan Disco and Olomouc-based Nylon Jail. In the evening, Pohřební kapela will get you dancing to the rhythms of world music. Saturday’s program at Na Kafaře will begin in the morning with a guided tour of Obřany, and concerts by Sklad by Walda, indie electronic brother duo Aka Samuel and singer and pianist Alen. In the evening, Na Kafaře will attract deep electronic projects, the dark-pop Slovak duo Waterbased and Ima Teva with David Pomahač.

But Saturday’s program will feature more than music, offering three theatre performances for children in the morning - Mikroteatro - Gloria, DIP Theatre - Stromocity and Koráb Theatre - Fairytale for 3+1 Pigs and other children’s activities. Visitors can also enjoy adult theatre by Le Cabaret Nomade with a performance of Cabinet of Memory and a rich literary program at Riverside Coffee. This will include readings by Jan Těsnohlídek, Dominik Želinský (SK), Pavel Zajíc, Miroslav Sosoi, Klára Bartošová, Jan Valík, Filip Klega, Petya Stach, Jakub Pergler and Dominik Bárt. This will be followed by slam poetry featuring Ryška Riot, Medard Capek and Divá Bára.

Moravian Autumn, organised by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, has long been one of the most important musical events of the autumn season. For the third time it also included the student project New World of Moravian Autumn – living proof that the connection between academia and professional practice can yield stimulating and deeply artistic results. This project, which originated at JAMU as an experiment within the course in practical dramaturgy, has evolved into a fully-fledged and respected part of the festival programme over the past few years.  more

22 September this year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) - Lithuanian artist, composer, painter and choirmaster, founder of Lithuanian national music and a representative of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. The concert entitled Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis - MKČ 150, which clearly referenced this anniversary, took place on Thursday 23 October at Besední dům. The programme combined Čiurlionis’s compositions with works by František Chaloupka, who also collaborated on the project as dramaturge. The concert was given the umbrella title Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis / František Chaloupka: Moje cesta (My Journey), a nod to one of Čiurlionis' pictorial triptychs. Chaloupka's work, however, does not follow directly on from Čiurlionis. It follows its own path, but connects with him through inspiration in mythology, where it sees a strong reflection of the present.  more

The concert evening by PhilHarmonia Octet Prague with guest baritone Roman Hoza brought a programme conceived with curatorial sensitivity - with emphasis on the continuity of the classical tradition and its later metamorphoses.  more

The Brno staging of Janáček's Jenůfa at the Moravian Autumn Festival once again proved that even after many years, an original directorial concept can still reveal new dramatic and musical nuances when refreshed through a partly renewed cast and interpretive inventiveness. Martin Glaser’s direction remains firmly grounded in a realistic reading of the work, yet in combination with Robert Kružík’s musical leadership the production feels alive, gripping, and emotionally genuine.  more

The chamber music programme of the 53rd Moravian Autumn International Festival on Thursday featured songs by Franz Schubert arranged for guitar and voice by the duo María Cristina Kiehr (soprano) and Pablo Márquez (romantic guitar). The evening, entitled Longing, took place in Brno’s Besední dům.  more
